A Dream Came True

A dream came true on Sunday, February 1, 2026. For a couple of years, Mike and I have been planning to travel more and further. We talked about getting what we affectionately refer to as the Rolling Nap Wagon. Mike bought a fully equipped converted camper van from a random person on the other side of the valley on social media. A risk to be sure, but we can finally start to plan all of those adventures we talked about.

The van solves many of the issues we face that typically limit our ability to travel somewhat. We both have medical conditions where fatigue can come on fast and is most bothersome when one tries to relax and have a good time. Now technically we can nap anywhere.

Another issue we have are our adorable dogs, Wally and Tilly. Wally is a Jackadore and barks at most animals, noises, small children, and innocent passersby. Wally is also very large and can be as hyper as much as he can be vocal. Our little dog, Tilly, is much easier to manage. Part Chiuaua, part miniature pinscher, she’s a nervous type. I admittedly treat her as an infant. Yes, I am that old lady.

Back in the day, I would have no problem with primitive wilderness camping. Looking back, my bravery eventually lead to things being more painful than they should have been. Now I am wiser and much more picky about such things. Our new-to-us van includes a proper mattress. The campsites we choose must have shower facilities. At the very least proper toilets. There will still be no concierge.

The previous owner, Jeff, used the van before he decided to move to Portugal. The delivery of the van was a crossing of two transitional paths that has mutual benefit for all involved. When the Universe turns and clicks into place, it’s a beautiful thing. I finally allowed myself to become excited. I’m the type of person who doesn’t believe something will happen until it does. No plan is ever perfect, but I’m always up for an adventure.

The van only needed routine servicing. Show me a pre-owned vehicle that doesn’t. It took a couple of weeks to get done, but gave us a little time to discuss potential destinations. The plan is to start off relatively close to home to get ourselves and to orient ourselves and the dogs find our happy places in the van. In the few short jaunts around town, I’ve found the experience to be pleasant, comfortable and enjoyable. We’ve taken Tilly along before Wally and she adjusted well to her already familiar stroller box. On the next trip Wally will be joining us on his first ride in the van. He’s a big boy and I feel that he will take a little more time to get fully adjusted.

After some discussion, we decided to make Gold Canyon, Arizona our first destination. Familiar and nearby, our perspective has changed somewhat. We’ve been there before, exploring and seeing what we could see. This time we will take a deeper look to decide to look into this location as a destination that might possibly suit our vacationing needs. As is the process for all of the destinations. We will explore in the future.
